As an old Kentucky home to some 2,500 restaurants, Louisville’s taste sensations thrill most palates, from grits to gourmet, from burgers to burgoo. The Hot Brown, Louisville’s culinary hallmark, was created in 1923 when The Brown Hotel drew crowds for its nightly dinner dance, and Chef Fred Schmidt came up with his classic fare for wee-hours sustenance: An open-face turkey sandwich with bacon, pimento, and delicate mornay sauce. Barbeque tops many menus here, with some of the best at Mark’s Feed Store on Shelbyville Road and Famous Dave’s BBQ, known for pork ribs, chopped pork and brisket. The Flagship Restaurant, revolving atop 25 stories of the Galt House Hotel & Suites provides a spectacular Ohio River view, and Fourth Street is home to the first ever Maker’s Mark Bourbon House & Lounge, with an entire wall of backlit Maker’s Mark bottles. As for diversity, Café Kiliminjaro serves multi-ethnic dishes and libations from the cuisines of the Caribbean, Africa and South America. Mambo Cuban Cuisine brags up its authentic fare, noting easy access without customs hassle. Sully’s Restaurant & Pub, downtown, features a nightly DJ, daily drink specials and the city’s most eclectic pub fare. Mitchell’s Fish Market, flying in fresh catch daily, serves more than 80 seafood dishes for lunch and dinner. Chains range from Applebee’s, Bahama Breeze, and Bob Evans to Hard Rock Café and Hooters, plus the 24-hour White Castle.
